On the Friday before Halloween, Greg went to work in costume -- the Blues Brothers. Atmos has an annual potluck luncheon for Halloween and costumes are always encouraged. I think Greg looked like quite the character. "It's 106 miles to Chicago. We have a full tank of gas, half pack of cigarettes. It's dark and we're wearing sunglasses. Hit it."

We were very happy to see the rain stop on Saturday morning so we could enjoy Halloween festivities in our neighborhood. Greg helped the kids carve their pumpkins in the morning. Rachel felt it was important for her pumpkin face to have eyelashes, "rosy cheeks", and a tongue sticking out. David wanted a silly face with pointy teeth showing and then decided to give the pumpkin some legs (those are the vertical cut-outs below the face). Apparently David didn't think his jack-o-lantern needed a nose this year, so he omitted that for the big mouth.
Rachel's is the left; David's is the right.

Through the years, it's gradually become tradition that the kids draw the jack-o-lantern face on the pumpkin and Greg carves it out. Trust me, this makes for some interested carving techniques -- with very few questions asked, Greg cut what they drew and the kids were thrilled.
Our cul-de-sac put together another good pre-trick-or-treating potluck. We had over 50 people join in the fun; so needless to say there was a lot of food and a gazillion children in costume. Greg pulled the firepit out to the street to help everyone stay warm while handing out candy.
Since Greg and Matt were manning the fire, I took the kids out for trick-or-treating with Mindy and the Berndts. At one house, David leaned around the man who was handing out candy and looked in his house. Very matter-of-factly and boldly, David told the man, "Mister, you need to clean your house."
Here's a picture of the pirate (who looks mean and wanted a moustache, scar, and dirty face), the cat (who had a jeweled nose & whiskers, and bell on her collar) and the witch.
After gathering more candy than David could carry, we headed home. Greg and Matt were already inside watching the Texas-OSU game. All 7 kids were happy to be warm and have sugar pumping through their veins. I sat at the kitchen table with my girl friends and played Sequence well into the night hours. Fun was had by all. Happy Halloween!
