We were in the car and happily on our way to 8am Easter service. Rachel was making some conversation in the backseat about how rich people can boss around poor people. So, I quickly decided to turn the topic to Jesus - especially since it's Easter!
I asked the kids what makes Easter special. They gave me the responses I was hoping for - about Jesus dying on the cross, coming back to life, and living forever with God in heaven. Okay, A+ for the kids.
Then, I asked them to think about Jesus' life on earth before he died. Can we remember anything he did? Rachel mentioned washing others feet and talking a lot about God. David didn't know what to say. So, I asked them if they remembered the story of Zacchaeus. Thinking to myself how smart I was to bring this up since it touches on how we use money, rich vs. poor, and stealing from others. I proceeded to briefly remind them of Zacchaeus, who took money from people and sometimes more than he should. That he wanted to see Jesus coming to his town, but he didn't want Jesus to see him so he hid up high in a tree. Zacchaeus was probably embarrassed or a little nervous about Jesus knowing him because of what he did. The kids are listening. I'm feeling like this is a great conversation to have on the way to church --- oh, God, smile down on us!
So, the story continues and I explain how Jesus saw Zacchaeus in the tree and told him "Come down out of that tree! I'm having dinner at your house!" Then it happens - David chimes in with his firm, opinionated thoughts:
"Mom! That's not right. Did Jesus really say that? You do NOT invite yourself over to someone's house for dinner. That's not polite. I can't believe Jesus would do that. That is not impressive!"
I was stunned and had no reply. Greg and I just looked at each other. End of story.
Happy Easter!
